The “King of Romance” with the unforgettable name is in Omaha this weekend! The Omaha Symphony welcomes Engelbert Humperdinck January 23-25 at the Holland Performing Arts Center.
This well-known pop singer rose to fame in the 1960s after adopting the name of the famous German opera composer as his stage name. Once called “the premier voice of the 20th century” by the London Times, the multiple Grammy nominee with the smooth three and ½ octave range and natural charm has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, including 64 gold and 24 platinum albums.
It was 40 years ago that he first hit the charts with the smash single “Release Me (and Let Me Love Again).” The song went to #1 in 11 countries; in fact, it was such a big success in the United Kingdom that it managed to prevent The Beatles’ two-sided hit “Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever” from reaching the top of the charts!
